League rules
Pinto rules
Converted from the provided rules PDF so parents don’t have to pinch-zoom a document like it’s 2011.
Game time
Games are 1 hour 30 minutes or 6 innings.
Defense
10 players play defense, with 4 outfielders in an umbrella formation.
Batting order & substitutions
Teams bat all players present. 6 players are required to field a legal team. There are no automatic outs. Late players may be added to the bottom of the order. Free defensive substitutions are allowed.
No metal cleats
Metal cleats are not allowed.
Bats
Maximum length is 33”. Maximum diameter is 2 3/4” or 2 5/8”. There is no maximum weight/length differential.
Six-run offensive limit
All innings have a six-run offensive limit. The play where the sixth run scores remains live, and all runs count until the play is complete.
Dropped third strike
A batter may run on a dropped third strike if there are fewer than 2 outs and first base is not occupied, or in any situation with 2 outs.
Mercy rule
A team leading by 15 runs after 3 innings, 12 runs after 4 innings, or 8 runs after 5 innings is declared the winner.
Pitching limit
Pitchers are allowed 18 outs per week. Coaches should track pitchers and outs. Once removed as pitcher in a game, a player may not re-enter as pitcher.
Balks
Balks are judgment calls and may not be protested. Balks are only called if the move is an act of deception. Lead-offs and pick-off moves are allowed with Pinto modifications.
Completed game requirement
For called games, Pinto games are complete after four or more equal innings. If weather or other reasons stop a game after that point, the team with the lead is the winner.
Pitching regulations details
- Coaches are responsible to monitor and follow all pitching regulations.
- In tournaments, scorekeepers record pitching outs and those records become official.
- No rest is required if a pitcher has pitched 12 outs or less in Mustang, Pinto, or Pony in 1 day.
- If a pitcher exceeds pitching limits, one complete calendar day of rest is required.
- A pitcher must have one calendar day of rest if he has pitched in his fifth inning in Mustang, Pinto, or Pony.
- One pitch to a batter counts as pitching in that inning for rest purposes, but not for total weekly outs.
- Innings pitched in a tie, postponed, or non-contest game count toward the weekly outs. Ineligible pitchers remain ineligible during replay.
- The U.B.B.A. pitching week is Monday through Saturday.
Balk modifications
- Traditional mechanical balks are not enforced in Pinto, including flinching, false starts, and double sets. Coaches should still teach pitching and pick-off mechanics.
- Runners picked off due to an illegal move are awarded the base they were trying to obtain.
- If a runner gets caught in a pickle due to an illegal balk, the play is immediately dead.
- If a balk occurs while a runner dives back to the original base, the ball is dead and no bases are awarded.
- If a balk occurs while runners attempt to advance, the ball is dead and all runners advance to the next base.
- Third-to-first pick-off moves are legal.
